A quality dentist will recommend that you have dental X-rays taken approximately once every two years. Dental X-rays can provide insight into the status of your current and future dental health. Therefore, your dental X-rays are kept on file and used throughout your life as a dental roadmap.
Depending on your age, your dentist may be looking at the position of your teeth during an X-ray procedure. Examining your dental alignments helps your dentist determine if you need orthodontic therapy. He or she will also look for any impacted teeth, signs of dental shifting, missing adult teeth, and other dental conditions.
- Signs of Poor Dental Health
The most common feature dentists look for when taking X-rays is dental decay and other oral infections. Nowadays, your dentist can detect minute signs of decay and early stages of gum disease by taking X-rays of the mouth. He or she can also detect root canal infections and some oral tissue infections. This makes X-rays highly effective and beneficial. In most cases, your dentist will order a set of X-rays following a dental cleaning or routine exam. However, you’ll only need to have X-rays taken about every two years, unless dental complications occur.
Another thing dental health professionals look for when taking X-rays is wisdom tooth development. Often, wisdom teeth grow in sideways, which can put pressure on the molars and incisors, causing dental shifting. Your dentist will want to monitor wisdom tooth development with X-rays to ensure that they are taken out before they cause damage to the surrounding teeth. Sometimes, the wisdom teeth and surrounding oral tissues become infected. Dentist can also detect this with X-ray technology and treat the infection before it causes major discomfort.

Dental abnormalities have aesthetic consequences, but they also make it more difficult to clean and care for the mouth. For example, brushing and flossing become more challenging when certain teeth are blocking their dental counterparts. Early orthodontic treatment can intercede and prevent abnormal dental development, which means that it’s important to talk to an orthodontist about your child’s dental health today.
- Get a Head Start on a Beautiful Smile
The earlier an orthodontist evaluates your child’s dental status, the sooner your child can undergo treatment and achieve a beautiful smile. Many dental abnormalities can’t be seen by the naked eye, so you might not realize that your child has an impacted cuspid or that he or she is missing an adult tooth. Early detection and treatment can ensure that your orthodontist discovers any problems before they interfere with the surrounding teeth and oral bones.
- Interrupt Abnormal Dental Development
An orthodontist can detect a variety of possible dental abnormalities by examining early dental development. For example, an orthodontist can use dental X-rays to determine whether a child will suffer from dental overcrowding. After detecting the problem, an orthodontist can apply the necessary treatment to ensure that all of the teeth have the room necessary to erupt and develop properly.
- Repair Underbite and Associated Dental Problems
The underbite is characterized by the lower front teeth sitting in front of the upper teeth. This dental condition can cause discomfort in the jaw joint. It can also make eating and communicating more difficult, which may create unnatural wear patterns on the teeth. If this condition isn’t treated early, patients may have to endure prolonged orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery. If treated when the oral bones are still flexible, this condition can be treated relatively quickly.

From the Desk of Jenny Krantz, RDH
Have you ever wondered why your hygienist keeps telling you that you need to floss EVERYDAY? The reason why it is important to floss your teeth everyday is because bacteria forms colonies underneath your gums. These colonies of bacteria can cause the gums (gingiva) to become red, swollen, and bleed. Flossing, in the correct way, mechanically breaks up these colonies. Now for the reason why "daily" flossing is necessary: It only takes 24-48 hours for the bacteria colonies to forms again. Therefore, if you floss every day, the colonies don't have time to form and your gums stay healthier. Flossing also helps prevent cavities that occur between teeth.
Healthy gums and teeth contribute to a healthier body!
