4 Common Habits that Dull the Bright Glow of Your Smile

Last updated 9 months ago

Maintaining healthy oral habits such as regular brushing and flossing can prevent a number of dental complications. However, any family dentist will tell you that many common lifestyle habits can inadvertently stain tooth enamel and cause unsightly discolorations. If you engage in any of the following activities, you may be dulling the natural glow of your smile.

  1. You smoke. Smoking is by far the most serious offender when it comes to tooth discoloration. However, your dentist will caution you to stop smoking for a number of reasons. While it certainly contributes to enamel staining, smoking can also lead to even more severe issues such as oral cancer. If you smoke, stopping now can help protect your teeth—and your overall health.
  2. You drink coffee, tea, or red wine. Drinking coffee, tea, or red wine is a daily occurrence for many people. For some, it provides a needed energy boost throughout the day. For others, it offers a way to unwind at the end of the night. For everyone, however, it causes considerable tooth staining.
  3. You eat dark fruits. Many nutritional experts extol the benefits of eating dark fruits. Blueberries, blackberries, and pomegranates offer numerous vitamins and antioxidants. Unfortunately, your family dentist will warn you that these healthy and delicious foods also cause stained teeth.
  4. You brush your teeth too hard. Many dental patients may assume that vigorous brushing is advantageous for healthy teeth. However, brushing too hard can scratch or damage enamel, leaving it vulnerable to staining. Instead, invest in a soft-bristled toothbrush and remember that it’s more important to brush regularly than rigorously.
