Periodontal Disease: What You Need to Know
It's easy to take our gums for granted, but gum disease can cause problems that need plenty of attention, and that can even lead to lost teeth and other health problems. Gingivitis is the swelling and redness that occurs when plaque forms around gums and hardens. The body responds by sending healing cells to the gums through the blood, which causes the redness and swelling.
Periodontitis can occur after continuous gingivitis, and causes the teeth to become long and unattractive. Eventually, the bacteria in your mouth can enter the blood system and cause heart disease, heart attacks, or blood clots. Gingivitis is reversible, but periodontitis is not.
